How to Floss Properly

Most of us know how to brush our teeth properly, and do so at least twice a day. Studies have shown that we do not floss our teeth as often as we should. Flossing is one of the best ways to help maintain oral health and prevent larger problems from occurring in the future. This could include tooth loss, inflamed gums, or even periodontal disease. Brushing alone will not reach thirty percent of the surface of the tooth. If it is ignored, that plaque can build up and lead to tartar.

In order to floss properly, first take a piece of floss about 18 inches long, or roughly the length between the tips of your fingers and your elbow. Leaving about two inches between your hands, wrap the floss around your index and middle fingers on both hands. The slide the floss in between two teeth, then wrap it around one of the teeth into a ‘C’ shape around the base; gently slide it under the gum line.

Make sure that you floss both sides of the teeth. Use a new section of the 18-inch piece of floss for each tooth, as it wears and picks up particles as you use it.

It is also important to come in for regular dental examinations. By doing so, we can inspect the teeth, gums, and mouth to ensure that they are free of any cavities or issues. Between dental examinations, if you notice any pain in your mouth, make sure to contact us and schedule an appointment. By fixing a tooth at the start of an issue, you can help prevent further damage to it in the long run.
