Cosmetic Dentistry and Why Get It

Cosmetic Dentistry covers a wide variety of procedures that will help the appearance of your teeth and smile. These procedures range from whitening to repairing or replacing your teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can be a selective procedure you choose, such as whitening your teeth. It can also be a necessary procedure that will be needed to aid in the health of your mouth, like dental fillings or root canals. It can also benefit you if you need full mouth restoration, or if you need to have your teeth fixed due to injury or accident you might have had.

What it is

Cosmetic dentistry is usually referred to for any dental work that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, or bite. It also provides restorative benefits, such as dental fillings. Now fillings can be made with porcelain or composite materials that match the color of your teeth, and help maintain the natural appearance of your smile. There are several procedures and options you can have that are classified under cosmetic dentistry. Some can be done in one visit, while other procedures may require two or more visits to complete.

Why would you have a Cosmetic dentistry procedure?

There are several procedures you can have done. The most commonly requested on is Teeth Whitening, or teeth bleaching. This is usually done because over time, teeth are stained and discolored from the food and beverages consumed. Not everyone’s teeth can be bleached, so it is best to check with your dentist so they can examine if your teeth can be bleached.

Veneers are also a cosmetic procedure. They are custom made out of porcelain or composite material to be cemented to the front side of your tooth. If you have a crooked tooth, chipped teeth, or a gap between teeth, this will help to cover it.

Dental implants are also designed to help replace missing teeth. They are designed to act as the tooth root an anchor the artificial tooth like a crown or bridge would.

Another type of procedure is the placement or crowns, or caps, which fit over your whole tooth after the dentist has cleaned it away from plaque. These are used to treat teeth that are poorly shaped, decayed, broken, chipped, or have large filings. Placing crowns on a tooth gives it reinforcement to pressure caused when you bite.

Bonding is another common cosmetic procedure. This is a process that allows for materials that are your tooth’s color, to bond to the tooth. It is mostly used to repair or improve the appearance of a tooth that has been broken, chipped, or badly stained. This allows for a beautiful appearance of your smile.

The necessity of Cosmetic dentistry

While some of the procedures are optional, there are also procedures that are necessary. You may have a deep cavity that will require a root canal or even a crown. These would be needed because it would help in the health in your tooth, and could prevent larger issues from forming in the future. You may also need to have a larger cosmetic dentistry procedure, dealing with your whole mouth if you are in an accident. If you have significant damage done to your mouth or teeth, you will have to visit the dentist to see which procedure would be best for you.
