Good Dental Hygiene Practices

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping your mouth and teeth clean so you can prevent dental problems.  It will also prevent issues like cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath.  By following a daily routine you will have healthy teeth and gums with a reduced chance to have tooth decay and other dental problems.  These can be quick and easy steps to help prevent costly issues in the future.

 

 

Why it is important

 

The health of the teeth and mouth are linked to your overall health in numerous ways. If you do not take the time or steps to take care of your teeth, you could be doing more harm to yourself than you know.  If you do not have proper dental hygiene, your appearance could be lacking.  One of the first things people notice when the meet you is your teeth and having yellow or bad teeth will make your appearance look shabby.  You can also develop bad breath.  While you may not realize it, others are certainly to.  Gum disease such as gingivitis, is caused from the lack of proper dental care.  This will cause the mouth pain, and in severe cases, the loss of your teeth.  Losing your teeth is a much bigger deal than you might think.  False teeth are very difficult to get used and to care for.  It is much cheaper to go to the dentist, brush, and floss your teeth than it is to replace them.  In severe cases, you may get a tooth infection, and it could spread damage throughout your body.

 

 

What you can do for good dental hygiene

 

To help care for your mouth and teeth, you can do some easy preventative measures.  The first is to take the time and go to the dentist at least twice a year for an examination.  Remember to replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if the bristles start to get worn.  Also make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and to floss once a day.  Another thing to help is to drink clear liquids rather than sodas or dark liquids.  As soda is bad to drink, sugary candies and snacks are also bad to eat.  These products stick to your teeth and will eat away at the enamel, which causes tooth decay more quickly.  If you notice any pain or problems, contact your dentist as soon as possible to have the issues fixed.  Taking care of your oral health helps take care of your overall health.

 

 

The consequences affect more than just your teeth

 

Bath teeth can cause serious physical illnesses.  Poor dental health can cause nausea, tiredness, and headaches, along with other physical issues.  Some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries, or strokes might be linked to the inflammation and infection that oral bacteria can cause.  Another thing oral health can cause is Endocarditis, which is an infection of the heart’s inner lining.  This is usually caused from germs from other parts of your body spreading through your bloodstream and attaching to the damaged areas of your heart.  Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection, and put the gums at risk.  Gum disease is more frequent and severe with people who have diabetes, mainly because they have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels.
